There is hope! Compared to last spring (last few years really) the prices have taken a pretty massive tumble. Still not *cheap*, but waaaaay better.
I told myself I’d never live in Seattle, but I’m really digging this place... Garage. Rooftop deck. Gorgeous, modern interior. Sleeper exterior. Even a yard!

1700 for an entire house in an OK part of Seattle? My suspicion alarm is going off. Has the market sagged that much?

8 months ago there wasn’t a 1 bedroom apartment on the Eastside under 1500. Scrolling through today, I’m finding plenty at 1200, and some 2 bedrooms just squeezing under the 1500 mark. Even including utilities! I ’m guessing part of it’s just the season, but prices definitely seem better

But can you balance on it?

$1700 is one bed money in that area. Guessing scam or ploy to rob and murder potential renters. However if it
isn’t a scam/ploy that’s a sweet house in an awesome location for $1700.

And a great deal of jealousy....

Is that ad real?!? That’s a fucking steal. Updated house in Greenlake.... $1700.... Do it do it do it.

My old roommate found an old lady-owned home in Bridal trails for 1500. 2 bed, 2 bath rambler. 2 car garage. Nice yard. It wasn’t even advertised online because the owner didn’t like technology. Miracles do happen!
But yeah I'd go in expecting to defend my kidneys

That might be it. I know the market has slowed, and there may be some oversupply as well - so many apartments being built on the eastside. I am still skeptical about a whole house in an area that hipsters seem to like, however.

I kind of regret paying off my student loans yesterday.
![]() 12/15/2018 at 21:47 |

That’s a crazy deal. I mean I was renting a 4bd/2.5 ba place in South Cove with huge fenced yard for $2550, which I thought was an insane deal, but that’s like a whole new level.
Even in the mid 2000's that would have been a 2K a month place. And at that point, I was renting a 2BD/2BA in Issaquah for 900 bucks, and my wife was paying 425 a month for her place (an awesome little converted garage with fenced yard right off Gilman
)
...

What I’ve learned from this is that Seattle has the coolest homes by a landslide.
If only I could transport them anywhere else...

Funny enough, I'm struggling with what do with the rest of my student loans. The bill sucks, but having cash on hand sure is more of a relief.
I know you’re a fancy manager and you used to own your own business, but put me down as a reference and I will tell them you pulled 67 orphans from a burning bus.

Whoa, bridal trails?! Kill your friends and take the rental.

Seems too good to be true.

It definitely hurt to drop that much in one place. Not sure if it was the right call, but it will be nice getting to keep more of my paycheck each month.
If it’s still around in a month or two (lol) I’ll give them your contact info. Don’t let me down!!!

Man I love South Cove. One cul-de-sac in there puts on a yearly Christmas spectacle, with massive wooden figures. Ever see that? Those families are pretty much what kept me eating during the early window washing days. So many referrals from all of them...
I'm hopeful that this cool down continues

I'll teach you how, for $1700 a month

That's more than my mortgage.

Yeah that was right by our old place. Used to walk over with the kiddos.
The prices there when we left in ‘17 were insane. I hope it keeps cooling off
too in case we
move back...

That looks like a genuinely excellent deal if it’s not a scam. The interior is swanky as fuck.

Damn, that rooftop deck is slick as hell. My condo has a small balcony/deck that I don’t even use, because it’s too small to do anything with.

Million dollar houses in Bellevue would be 150K in much of the country.

The house is real, and for sale
. I can’t speak for the rental listing with a suburban Chicago area code, though. The sale price seems reasonable for the house (remarkable remodel, good neighborhood), but you’d have to be willing to live 6 feet from a Catholic elementary school’s playground and on a busy street. Given the recent asking price reduction, the bargain rental listing, and the fact that it’s owned by a
generation-skipping family trust
, I think it might be real and the location has thrown off enough potential buyers or tenants to make the heirs who inherited this place a little desperate to monetize it.
ETA: possibly relevant to your interests, the best barber in Seattle is located around the corner.
ETA 2: extremely for sale,
it had an open house today
. I bet they’d show it tomorrow if you called the realtor.

It’s right up against an elementary school playground, and on a busy street. In a sagging market, I can see it.

My wife is convinced this is a scam. I also did a quick Zillow with a splash of Redfin of the area. Contact number is from Illinois. I can imagine a rich Californians owning property in Greenlake, but... I mean not to mention that it's would cost that much if not more to rent something like the in North Everett -- and not the ritzy part either. Sad!

You did good. Paying off debt when you can afford to is almost always good choice.
![]() 12/16/2018 at 01:53 |

Price seems pretty good, as you said. I wish I was in a position to make that work! Even if it did mean being surrounded by Seattle traffic....
Hmm. Now I’m wondering if the rental listing could be real as well.
What is this best barber? I’m pretty partial to Bang on Pike, and that’s after trying a ton of places

Check RPM’s post above. Looks like the home is for sale and located in a... Unique area , and as for the rental listing... No clue.
Hey, do you think BECU will spot me $ 700,000 at a 0% rate ?
![]() 12/16/2018 at 01:56 |
|
Yes it is. I've lusted after a nice rooftop deck for years, and this one even has a good amount of privacy!
![]() 12/16/2018 at 01:58 |
|
Hell no. BECU wouldn’t loan me $230k back in 2014, in spite of having 20% down , gainful employment for X years with an appropriate income , and good credit.

Sounds about right. Between the constant “website unavailable due to planned m aintenance”, having to replace cards every three months when they stop working, and frustrating customer service experiences I’m not sure why I still use them.
![]() 12/16/2018 at 02:06 |

Coming from Wells Fargo, it's been a massive improvement. But they don't seem interested in giving out loans, and their cards are garbage.

Valentine’s. I get my hair cut closer to my office these days, but I still think Valentine is the best.

I love this area, but I don't have much buying power. Save up forever, or keep buying cheap cars and bikes......

You do you man, no judgement here. I just can’t wrap my mind around it all sometimes. Heck, my buddy was paying $1700/month in rent for a 1-bedroom high-rise apartment in Arlington, VA back in 2006. Still can't wrap my mind around that . A part of me despises being a home owner anyways.
![]() 12/16/2018 at 09:23 |
|
That’s not that bad. Less than twice my rent for a home that’s twice as big and much nicer. I wouldn’t pay that much in rent because I’d put that towards owning a home, but in that perspective, not bad.
![]() 12/16/2018 at 20:13 |

That might be a good sign. Things were getting ridiculous around here.
